The PLCP0050,PLCP0052,PLCP0054 High Performance Serial Card are OPTO-ISOLATED RS-422 4-wire/ RS-485 2-wire serial port adapters. The Cards have an onboard 200 mA DC/DC converter eliminating the need for an external power supply. The Cards are equipped with a wait state generator to accommodate very high speed busses or low frequency oscillator. The onboard serial controller, an enhanced version of the industry standard 8250A UART allows for improved throughput. The on chip FIFO, and the extensive check done on the incoming characters, reduces the CPU overhead allowing baud rates unachievable with "standard" devices. The Card is designed to plug directly into a standard PC/PC-AT slot and will run all the standard software written for the PC.

DESCRIPTION

The PLCPOO50 High Performance Serial Card is designed to plug directly into a standard PC expansion slot. The base address can be placed on any 8-byte boundary in the IBM I/O space below 1024. When configured for base address of 1016 or 760, the Card operates as a fully compatible COM1: or COM2: port, respectively. The PLCPOD50 is shipped with base address preset to COM1: (1016), however it can be easily set by the user for any port address. Hardware interrupt can be set to any level from IRQ 2 through 7, and may be enabled or disabled by user software. The PLCPOO50 provides an onboard wait state generator capable of generating 0 to 3 wait states. The Transmitter driver can be enabled or disabled via an opto- isolated RTS signal. Also, transmission via Tx and reception via Rx can be independently enabled/disabled by user software through internal registers. The serial controller has 35 individually addressable internal registers, in four banks, which are fully software configurable. This affords the user a great deal of control over the serial I/O stream, as well as providing complete error-checking capabilities. In addition, a full bank is dedicated to 8250NI6450 UART emulation, so that the PLCPOO50 can run all of your currently installed 8250N/16450 software without modification. This is the default (power-up) mode of operation. Hardware interrupts from 16 different sources can be individually enabled/disabled by the user to meet specific needs, and are maskable by user software at two levels. Priority levels can be reassigned by interrupt-handling software, and special purpose flags provide for quick error checking in either interrupt-driven or polling schemes. Interrupt conditions include recognition of standard ASCII and EBCDIC control characters as well as recognition of user-defined control/address characters. Standard control character recognition provides for significant reduction in CPU overhead when' using character-based protocols. Incoming and outgoing data are buffered through independent FIFO's that can be set from one to four bytes deep. The user can monitor the FIFO levels via internal registers, or can assign thresholds for each FIFO which' can be set to generate an interrupt on overrun for Rx or under run for Tx conditions. Two onboard 16-bit timers/counters provide the user with several flexible clocking options. Each timer/counter can be independently configured as a baud rate generator, which can be useful when the user needs difent baud rates for Tx or Rx, or both Tx and Rx can be tied to the same clock sources. In both cases, baud rates of up to 288,000 bits/sec. are easily attainable, and are under full control of the user. Each timer/counter can be configured to generate an interrupt on timeout. The mode of operation, output and source of each timer/counter is fully software configurable.
 
   

BENEFITS

Opto-isolation eliminates ground loop currents, noise, and common mode voltage problems thus increasing the reliability of the transmission. The transmitter and receiver lines have been isolated from the remainder of the machine, and from the ground, providing added protection for the computer and the operator. The RS422 connection can be used in a master/slave full duplex network. The RS485 can be used in any multimaster or master/slave half duplex network. The capability of generating an interrupt upon receiving a control character or a matching address reduces the overhead time required by the host computer. To achieve high speed communications the use of the FIFO's is a must because the computer can do housekeeping jobs while the serial controller sends and receives characters. The ability to generate and recognize the microLAN address makes this card compatible with serial ports of the following microprocessors:

The ability to generate interrupts upon receiving user programmed control characters reduces overhead in networking schemes, eliminating the need for the software to check every incoming character for a match with the programmed
